Thursday 6th July will see the official opening of the new kick-about area at Cliftonville Community Centre in Manor Street. The £60,000 scheme was developed as part of the North Belfast Partnership’s Community Environment Support Programme for inner North Belfast and is the result of consultation between Cliftonville & Manor Street Community Group and Groundwork NI over the past year. The scheme has transformed an area of waste ground into a valuable resource for the whole community.
The project received £34,545 of funding from the EU Urban II Community Initiative Programme with an additional £25,455 from the Greencare III programme.
The site, which is adjacent to the Cliftonville Community Centre, has been levelled, re-surfaced and surrounded by ball-stop fencing to provide an all-weather 5-a-side pitch for the local community.
Speaking on behalf of North Belfast Partnership, Cllr Caral Ní Chuillin said:
“Its great to see this facility being made available in an area that has suffered much deprivation over the years. Urban II is about improving the physical landscape in inner North Belfast and improving the daily lives of its inhabitants. This project very clearly does both and, because it is part of an Environmental Improvement programme focussing on ten districts in the area, it provides local people with an opportunity to network with other sections of the community.”
