The Housing Executive has announced details of an improvement scheme costing over £2m scheme for 65 flats at Duncairn Gardens in North Belfast.
The flats, which were built in the early 1960s, are located at the junction of the Antrim Road and Duncairn Gardens in North Belfast. They are also something of a tourist attraction as local artist John Luke lived here until his death in 1975.
During the current scheme the internal layout of the individual flats will be improved with new kitchens and bathroom; the exterior of the flats will get a face-lift and CCTV will be installed to provide additional security for tenants.
Sean McKenna, the Housing Executive’s local District Manager, welcomed the start of the scheme and said:
“The Housing Executive continues to invest significantly in North Belfast to provide its tenants with quality homes. I am extremely pleased that the flats are being upgraded – the comprehensive improvements planned will ensure that residents have accommodation suitable for the 21st century.
We realise that community agreement is fundamental if schemes like this are to be successful. Tenants have been fully involved at all stages of the development process and are pleased with our plans, which will not only improve their individual flats but will make the entire complex a more secure and inviting place to live.
Mary Coleman has lived in the complex for 33 years and she was delighted with the news:
“It’ll be like coming back to a new house with a nice new modern kitchen and bathroom and double glazing – everything will just be more convenient and secure.”
