North Belfast Community Organisation wins National Award |
Date: 25/11/2005
|
The Ashton Community Trust a community run and led organisation which operates in the New Lodge area of inner north Belfast has just been commended in the prestigious BURA scheme. The Trust was the only Northern Ireland organisation to reach the shortlist and has been commended for its achievements in community regeneration. Established in 1991 as the Ashton Centre in the New Lodge area of North Belfast, the Ashton Community Trust is a non-denominational community regeneration project formed by local residents to tackle poverty and deprivation in a district of high unemployment at the heart of some of the most confrontational areas in Northern Ireland. The Trust’s mission is to ‘promote positive change and improve the quality of life of the North Belfast community’. It aims to achieve this by focusing on employment, education and training and through Ashton Centre Development Limited (ACDL) the primary activities of which are the letting of office and workshop space to local business (current tenants includes a GP surgery) and developing community business projects. In an area where 55% of the population are economically inactive and where 59% of young people leave school without formal qualifications over 400 people have gained employment as a result of training received at the Ashton Centre. The Trust itself is the largest single employer of local people through the projects it manages and its social enterprises such as childcare and computer support. The trust is also a major driver behind the campaign for the eradication of domestic violence and is lead agent of the Community Empowerment Partnership, initiatives which are helping to raise community self esteem.
The Awards will be presented at a prestigious ceremony to be held at the House of Lords, followed by a lunch and learning session at Portcullis House in London on Tuesday 10 January 2005.
