The Crumlin Road is a key arterial route containing many landmark buildings that help to distinguish the character of the north of the city. Now, under phase 2 of the Arterial Routes Initiative, opportunities exist to explore the potential for improvement of the lower Crumlin Road. North Belfast Partnership, in association with local community groups, is facilitating consultation with local residents and wider interest groups on their vision for an enhanced Crumlin Road.
The Arterial Routes Initiative is led by Belfast City Council and represents an inter-agency approach to enhancing the vitality of many of the arterial routes that connect with the city. The Belfast Area Partnerships, Northern Ireland Housing Executive and Belfast Regeneration Office are working in association with Belfast City Council, to make positive linkages between regional, city and local regeneration proposals.
Central to the regeneration of the arterial routes is consultation with local residents and interest groups such as local businesses, transport provides and commuters that regularly use the Crumlin Road. The consultation process is being facilitated by North Belfast Partnership, working closely with local community development agencies to ensure that people from the area have a say in proposals for the regeneration of Crumlin Road.
Local consultation will consider potential projects that will help to revitalise the lower Crumlin Road. Support from the Brighter Belfast Programme has secured £100,000 for environmental enhancement works to kick-start the regeneration process. Efforts will be made to draw down additional funding to complement the BCC monies available for each route, either by identifying new funding sources or by encouraging partners to prioritise investment on the arterial routes.
Following the consultations, North Belfast Partnership will produce a report identifying key issues and priority projects that will commence the regeneration of the Crumlin Road.
