Urban Diversity and Inclusion Exchange - an Action-Learning Programme

UDIEX ALEP is co-ordinated in Belfast by Quartiers en Crise and funded by Belfast Regeneration Office. The programme proposes to establish a thematic network of 24 EU partners and 3 partners from new member states which view the issues of diversity, integration and inclusion as core issues in relation to exchanging good practice and increasing the capacity of 300-400 key participants from a multi-sector, multi-discipline, multi-agency back-ground.UDIEX  logo

The main objectives of this programme are:

  • Create a network of over 24 cities who are actively engaged in addressing the issues of Diversity, Integration and Inclusion.
  • Creating an on line Mentoring and Coaching Service to cascade knowledge and good practice.
  • Establish a broad platform of cities which have Diversity and Inclusion as key needs in their urban regeneration programmes.
  • Generate discussion and influence policy in tackling the issues of Diversity, Integration and inclusion at EU, National and local levels.

The programme involves eight topic-based exchanges reflecting the subjects that the partner cities have identified.  The table below provides an overview of this element of the programme:

This workshop had looked at a number of issues relating to this theme e.g., children at risk within their family; teaching of host country language to the children of immigrants; dealing with young school drop-outs; youth unemployment.

The role of ICT for the promotion of Social Inclusion

More and more technology is seen as the organizing principle of modern society. The workshop will show the way which Crotone and the other case studies have used the new technologies to promote progressive social changes and create a more egalitarian and democratic society.

Belfast were offered 20 "vouchers" to be used between the eight workshops, which the Belfast URBACT Steering Group split between each of the URBAN areas. Participants were chosen who have been previously, or are currently, involved in the URBAN Programme, have relevant skills and experience and be supported by an organisation which will facilitate involvement and dissemination.

The programme also includes 6 Venice Sessions. These sessions, together with the 8 topic based workshops, are fundamental actions of the Action Learning Programme. The Venice Management Team undertakes the co-ordination and all sessions are held in Venice.

The Venice Sessions objectives are:

  • To create cross-topic group working with a focus on key national and European trends in relation to the core themes of inclusion; integration and diversity
  • To deepen the capitalisation process
  • To provide participants with a broader contextual European policy and programmes input
  • To create on-line mentoring and coaching network

Only those who have participated in topic-based workshop can attend a Venice session.
