Physical Regeneration

Economic decline and the legacy of violence in North Belfast have resulted in high levels of derelict land, brownfield sites and blight. Urban II anticipate that regeneration of pivotal areas could lead to local development, synergy and improved infrastructure.

The Partnership are therefore developing and contributing to a number of strategic programmes aimed at improving the physical landscape of inner North Belfast, while at the same time attempting to stimulate inter community contacts. These programmes include:

  • The Community Environment Support Programme is designed to offer community access within a strategic programmatic approach which takes on board the need for environmental planning and offers facilitation to address access and capacity issues in both project design and implementation
  • The Belfast City Council led Arterial Routes Initiative to develop integrated regeneration plans for designated nodes along the key roads into the city

The Partnership believe that improving the physical attractiveness of the area and extending the range of recreational opportunities, is the key to building sustainable communities.

The Urban II Programme has also gone through an open call for applications for large-scale capital build projects (Physical Regeneration Awards) and hopes to announce the successful projects in the near future.

These new awards are in addition to the £1million already spent by 28 smaller refurbishment projects across North Belfast which were completed in 2004. The range of projects funded include the upgrade and refurbishment of buildings and equipment to improve community services such as childcare facilities, IT training suites, sports facilities and advice centres.

Detailed information on all physical regeneration programmes are contained on the webpages along with contact details for the appropriate members of staff.
